What is what an equitable product?

An equitable product is a product resulting from a trade based on the dialogue, the transparency and the respect which contributes to the sustainable development of the developing countries and which are beneficial at the same time for the small agricultural and hard-working producers, environment and consumers. The equitable products must receive a certification by recognized organizations.

It is thought sometimes that the equitable trade is reduced to coffee and bananas. What is really the equitable products?

When one speaks about equitable trade, one thinks immediately of food products like the coffee, the cocoa, the, the chocolate (shelf, powder, Neapolitan), sugar, the cereals, the quinoa, rice, the pastes, the fresh fruits, fruit juices, honey, the spices, alcohols (rum, beers, wines), the biscuits, jams, seeds, oils and nut but the equitable trade is not limited to them It relates to also the foodstuff non(vètements, produced artisanal,…) even if they are still minority in proportion of the total sales (84% compared with 16% for the foodstuff non).

With what can one recognize the products of the equitable trade?
Today, there does not exist for the equitable trade of official public label, like label AB for the biological products. However certain a number of private guarantees make it possible to recognize the products resulting from the Max Havelaar equitable trade is the most known label and more spread, in particular in large distribution. Max Havelaar France labellise since 1992 of the dies of equitable food products (coffee, banana, juice of orange, the, cane sugar, honey, rice, mango, cocoa, pineapple…) but also of cotton transformed into linen for the house and of cosmetics.
Several marks and ensigns members of the Platform for Equitable trade (PFCE), offer products which can carry the logo of the PFCE. That means that the association or the company which markets the product was the subject of an internal evaluation on the basis of Chartre of the PFCE. This one comprises imperative engagements, of which a right remuneration of the producers.
One also finds other labels general practitioners, less widespread, like Bio Equitable the Label ESR or that of ONG Oxfam, present in the shops of the Artisans network of the World. They bring guarantees equivalent to those of Max Havelaar.

Previously, it was necessary to go in specialized stores (like the Oxfam-Stores of the world) to buy equitable products, but currently, one finds
also these products in the stores bio and natural, on Internet more and more and in the supermarkets from now on.
